Alex Kilpatrick, the first Chairman of the Friends of Allestree Park - and the driving for ce behind the setting up of the group and its ongoing activities since then - was awarded the Evening Telegraph Environmental Champions award for 2008, one of 12 such honours presented to people who had performed outstanding service to the community. Alex received his award at a ceremony at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday 18th May, 2008On top of this, Alex was singled out from the 12 recipients to be awarded The Mayor of Derby's Special Award - 'Environmental Champion' for 2007/2008. He received a certificate, an engraved glass goblet and medal from the retiring Mayor during the Mayor-making ceremony at the Assembly rooms on Wednesday 21st May, 2008.

Very sadly, Alex died of a brain tumour in January, 2009. He is very much missed.
The Friends are shortly to erect information panels in the Park. These include a reference to Alex.
