January 11th,   2012

The path from the car park to the lake is now complete, although a barrier is required to stop vehicle access, whilst allowing wheelchair/pushchair access.

The lake bank revetments are almost complete, additional back filling needs to be applied.

The posts for the new  Big Wood nature trail are soon to be installed and the leaflet for this and a completely new one for the existing trail around the Lake only need a few finishing touches.

Clearance of sycamore and rhododendron in the central part of Big Wood by the Derby branch of the British Trust for  Conservation Volunteers is well advanced. The larger sycamore trees are to be felled by the City Council Parks Department, while the BTCV are to continue for several days more during January and February in clearing the rhododendron. Sycamore is being left on the eastern margin maintain the integrity of the woodland edge and some clumps of rhododendron are not to be cleared in order to provide cover for wildlife until new planting of native shrubs (planned for autumn 2012) is established.
