Because of
its size and varied landscapes, Allestree Park provides much scope for
outdoor recreation of all kinds. There is, indeed, the golf course and
the lake for angling, but there is much more to do than this.
You can spend a whole day walking in the Park without retracing your steps. Walking is made much more pleasurable if you take the time to take in the magnificent views and to look at natural features - ranging from wild flowers to butterflies and birds.
The woods are particularly good for many species of fungi, especially in autumn and there are several magnificent trees of great age.
Allestree Park is a wonderful facility for enjoying the outdoors and learning about the natural world and has long been used as a venue for guided walks and other activities by the City Council and other organisations.
The Friends have organised several of these, including activity days for young people in collaboration with the City Council. Participants are able to enjoy a variety of things, including bird-box making, bug hunts and pond-dipping.
